Russia strikes major steel plant in Kryvyi Rih
The overnight Russian attacks hit Ukraine’s largest steel plant in the industrial city of Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
Ukrainian officials said two people were killed and 14 injured in the attack. ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih said key facilities linked to power generation and blast furnace operations were damaged, forcing parts of the plant’s production processes to halt.
The latest strike came amid an escalation in Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure in recent weeks. Russia also struck Ukraine’s largest grain export port on the Danube near the Romanian border last week.
Kyiv hit by missile strike as Ukraine reports wider attacks
A Russian missile strike early on Sunday triggered fires in at least two districts of Kyiv, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. The city’s military administration reported that three people were injured.
Kyiv region Governor Tymur Tkachenko said three additional people, including a child, were injured in drone attacks across the region.
The attacks form part of a wider pattern in which both Russia and Ukraine have increasingly targeted infrastructure and economic assets far from the immediate front lines.
Ukraine launches major drone attack on Moscow region
Ukraine also launched a heavy drone assault on the Moscow region. Governor Andrei Vorobyov said an 83-year-old man was killed and several others were injured in the Podolsk area.
Vorobyov described the assault as one of the largest Ukrainian drone attacks on the Moscow region since Russia’s invasion began in February 2022.
A warehouse belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer, was also hit. Reuters footage showed thick smoke rising above the company’s Koledino facility, located about 45 km south of Moscow.
Ukraine has targeted Wildberries in recent weeks, accusing the company of handling military goods as part of a broader campaign against Russian economic infrastructure supporting Moscow’s war effort.
Drone strike reported near Belgorod
A separate drone attack killed one person on a bus near the southern Russian city of Belgorod, according to the regional governor. Belgorod region borders Ukraine.
Ukraine’s military also said it had struck a facility in Russia’s Rostov region involved in producing missile fuel. Russia had not immediately commented on that claim.
NATO fighter downs drone over Romania
The latest exchange of attacks also brought a NATO member directly into the incident after a drone entered Romanian airspace.
Romania’s defence ministry said an F-18 fighter operating as part of a Spanish NATO air-policing contingent shot down the drone at 5:01 a.m. local time. The drone had entered Romanian airspace from Moldova.
NATO said the drone appeared to be Russian, although Romanian authorities did not establish its origin in their initial statement. Fragments from the destroyed aircraft were reported to have fallen in an uninhabited area between two villages.
Russia had not immediately commented on the incident.
War expands pressure on regional infrastructure
The latest strikes highlight the growing geographic reach of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with attacks affecting industrial facilities, warehouses, transport infrastructure and areas close to NATO territory.
Both sides have also intensified attacks involving commercial and energy-related targets. Ukraine has targeted Russian oil refineries, while Russia has continued strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure, including facilities important to grain exports.
