Australia Drop Jake Weatherald After Bangladesh Test Shock

Australia drop Jake Weatherald as Matthew Renshaw joins squad for Mackay Test
Matthew Renshaw is in contention to replace Jake Weatherald at the top of Australia’s batting order for the Mackay Test.

MACKAY, Australia — Australia have made a swift change to their Test batting order after their nine-wicket defeat to Bangladesh in Darwin, dropping Jake Weatherald and calling up Matthew Renshaw for the upcoming Mackay Test.

  • Jake Weatherald has been dropped after scores of 23 and 0 against Bangladesh.
  • Matthew Renshaw has been added to Australia’s squad and is the leading candidate to open with Travis Head.
  • Renshaw was the leading Sheffield Shield opener last season, scoring three centuries in 10 innings.
  • Marnus Labuschagne’s place at No.3 is also under scrutiny after another low-scoring Test.

Matthew Renshaw Emerges as Australia’s Leading Option

Renshaw’s domestic record makes him the most natural replacement for Weatherald at the top of the order. The 30-year-old was the best-performing Sheffield Shield opener last season, averaging just under 50 and recording three centuries from 10 innings.

He also has a strong record at the venue selected for Australia’s next Test. Renshaw has already made two first-class hundreds at Mackay, which is set to host its first Test.

His previous experience at international level also strengthens his case. Renshaw has played 14 Tests for Australia, although his most recent appearance came in Delhi three years ago, when he was used in the middle order.

Why Jake Weatherald Has Been Dropped

Weatherald’s latest Test appearance ended with scores of 23 and 0. He edged behind in Australia’s first innings before chopping the ball onto his stumps in the second innings.

The two dismissals took his average after 12 Test innings to 20.36. His omission comes only months after he received a national contract and earned recognition for his performances alongside Travis Head during Australia’s 4-1 Ashes triumph.

Australia coach Andrew McDonald said Weatherald had made technical changes following problems with LBW and bowled dismissals during the England series. However, the limited international sample made it difficult to determine whether those adjustments would withstand pressure.

“It’s always hard to critique small sample sizes on whether it holds up [at international level].”

Weatherald’s rapid return to the sidelines highlights the pressure on Australia’s top order following the unexpected defeat to Bangladesh.

Josh Inglis Remains Another Opening Option

Australia still have Josh Inglis within their 13-man squad. The 31-year-old has generally batted at No.5 or lower in Sheffield Shield cricket, but selectors have previously considered him capable of moving into the top order.

Inglis demonstrated that ability while opening for the Cricket Australia XI against England Lions last November. He scored 40 in one innings before producing an unbeaten 125 in the other.

For now, however, Renshaw appears to have the stronger credentials for a direct move into the opening position alongside Head.

Marnus Labuschagne Under Pressure at No.3

Australia also face a separate selection question surrounding Marnus Labuschagne. The No.3 batter scored 1 and 31 in Darwin and has now gone almost three years without an international hundred.

His recent Test record has become a growing concern, with Labuschagne averaging 25.23 across his last 42 innings.

McDonald acknowledged that the team needs greater production from its No.3 batter, while also pointing to positive signs in Labuschagne’s second innings before his dismissal.

“Ultimately, it’s 31. It’s not a big score. He’s lacked runs. He feels that. We feel that.”

The coach said Labuschagne and the coaching staff were working to get the best out of him, adding that some of the technical work appeared to have translated into changes under pressure.

What Australia Must Resolve Before Mackay

Australia now have a clear selection decision at the top of the order, with Renshaw in contention to partner Head. The selectors must also determine whether Labuschagne can regain consistency at No.3 as the team responds to its damaging defeat in Darwin.

The Mackay Test will therefore provide an immediate test of Australia’s revised batting plans, with Renshaw potentially returning to international cricket after a three-year absence.
