India Nepal border cooperation reviewed
The two-day meeting covered the broader range of bilateral cooperation related to border management and security. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to improving coordination in these areas, according to a Ministry of Home Affairs release.
The talks focused on practical issues affecting the management of the India-Nepal border, including the effective utilisation of existing infrastructure and coordination between the two sides.
Border infrastructure among key discussion points
A major part of the India Nepal border cooperation discussions involved strengthening and making more effective use of Integrated Check Posts, roads and railway networks. The two sides also discussed the removal of encroachments and the maintenance of boundary pillars.
Integrated Check Posts are important points for managing cross-border movement and supporting trade and connectivity. The focus on their effective utilisation formed part of the wider discussion on strengthening infrastructure along the border.
The maintenance of boundary pillars was also included in the talks, alongside measures concerning encroachments. These issues require continued coordination between the neighbouring countries because they directly relate to the management and upkeep of the shared border.
India and Nepal discuss trans-border crime
Security cooperation was another key element of the meeting. Officials from both countries discussed ways to address trans-border crime and criminal activities, highlighting the need for sustained coordination between relevant institutions.
The two sides also exchanged views on strengthening institutional coordination and capacity building across various sectors. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, both agreed to continue engagement in these areas.
The focus on criminal activity comes within the wider framework of bilateral border security cooperation. Regular engagement between the two countries provides a mechanism for officials to review emerging challenges and discuss coordinated responses.
Who led the India-Nepal JWG delegations?
The Indian delegation was led by Pausumi Basu, Joint Secretary (BM-I) in the Ministry of Home Affairs. Nepal’s delegation was headed by Ananda Kafle, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of Nepal.
The 14th meeting was held in Dehradun on August 20 and 21. The discussions covered both security-related concerns and infrastructure issues associated with management of the India-Nepal border.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to continue the dialogue. The next meeting of the Joint Working Group is scheduled to take place in Nepal at a mutually convenient date.
India-Nepal cooperation expands beyond border security
The latest border discussions come as India and Nepal continue to develop cooperation in other areas. On June 6 this year, the two countries officially launched a peer-to-peer cross-border remittance mechanism aimed at strengthening digital financial connectivity.
The system establishes a direct link between India’s Unified Payments Interface, or UPI, and Nepal’s National Payments Interface, known as NPI. The initiative represents another area of practical cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
India and Nepal maintain a multi-faceted relationship supported by strong people-to-people connections and cultural ties. Border management, security, infrastructure and financial connectivity are among the areas in which the two countries continue to engage through bilateral mechanisms.
Next India-Nepal border meeting to be held in Nepal
The decision to hold the next Joint Working Group meeting in Nepal will provide another opportunity for officials to review progress on the issues discussed in Dehradun. The two sides have agreed to maintain engagement on border infrastructure, security, institutional coordination and capacity building.
For now, the Dehradun meeting has reaffirmed the focus on practical border management, including infrastructure utilisation, boundary pillar maintenance and efforts to tackle trans-border criminal activities. The continuation of the JWG process is expected to keep these issues under regular bilateral review.
