US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he is “losing faith” in Iran, accusing Tehran of repeatedly failing to honor its commitments even as diplomatic negotiations between the two countries continue. Speaking during a televised Cabinet meeting at Camp David, Trump questioned Iran’s credibility while confirming that senior US officials remain engaged in talks aimed at addressing concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme and broader regional security.

Trump said Iranian authorities frequently seek dialogue but often fail to keep their promises. He argued that this pattern has made it difficult to place confidence in Tehran despite ongoing diplomatic efforts.

“They do lie, and they do misrepresent. They always want to talk, but they break their word so often,” Trump said.

Senior US officials continue negotiations

Despite his criticism of Iran, Trump said the United States remains committed to diplomatic engagement. He identified Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Senior Adviser Jared Kushner, Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as key members of the American team involved in discussions with Iranian officials.

“We have great people talking,” Trump said while referring to the ongoing negotiations.

The talks come as Washington and Tehran continue efforts to reduce long-standing tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security issues. The discussions are aimed at addressing concerns that have shaped relations between the two countries for years.

Trump cites attack on US base in Jordan

While discussing the negotiations, Trump referred to an attack on a US military base in Jordan, saying the incident occurred while diplomatic discussions were underway. He said he received information about the strike during the period of active engagement with Iran.

“Instead, I got a call from Pete that they just shot five missiles at one of our bases in Jordan,” Trump said, referring to US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.

The President used the incident to argue that regional security challenges remain serious even as diplomatic channels stay open.

President refuses to rule out further attacks

Asked whether additional attacks against American interests could occur, Trump said it would be unwise to dismiss the possibility. He stressed the importance of remaining alert in an unpredictable security environment.

“I think I’m going to be foolish to say no. You always have to keep your guard up,” Trump said.

Trump also commented on Iran’s long-term capabilities, saying he believes the country may experience periods of increased strength but would eventually weaken over time.

“They get weaker. They get a little stronger, maybe now, but they’ll get weaker, and then they peter out,” he said.

Diplomatic efforts continue

Trump’s remarks come as the United States and Iran continue diplomatic discussions focused on the future of Iran’s nuclear programme and wider regional security. Although the President voiced skepticism about Tehran’s reliability, he indicated that negotiations remain active through senior members of his administration.

The comments highlight the difficult balance between maintaining diplomatic engagement and responding to ongoing security concerns in the region. Whether the current round of talks leads to further progress remains to be seen as discussions between both sides continue.
