Sri Lanka spinner Prabath Jayasuriya has been officially reprimanded and handed one demerit point for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the second World Test Championship Test against India in Colombo.
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Prabath Jayasuriya has become the third player sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for an incident during the second World Test Championship Test between Sri Lanka and India. The Sri Lanka spinner was found to have breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.

Jayasuriya Sanctioned After Bat Incident
The incident took place after Jayasuriya was dismissed on the final ball of the day’s play on August 24. While walking back towards the pavilion, he struck the boundary wedges with his bat.
The action was treated as a breach of Article 2.2, which covers the abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, as well as ground equipment, fixtures and fittings during an international match.
Jayasuriya admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft. Because this was his first offence within a 24-month period, the sanction was an official reprimand along with one demerit point.
Officials Level Charge Against Sri Lanka Spinner
On-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella levelled the charge against Jayasuriya.
The sanction adds another disciplinary incident to a Colombo Test that has already seen two other players penalised by the ICC.
Jayasuriya Third Player Sanctioned in Colombo Test
Jayasuriya is the third player from the Test to receive an ICC sanction. India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando were previously handed 25% match-fee penalties for their involvement in an incident on the opening day.
Jaiswal and Fernando also received one demerit point each for the confrontation, which occurred during the 17th over of India’s first innings after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal.
Jaiswal-Fernando Altercation Led to Earlier Penalties
Following his dismissal, Jaiswal walked towards Fernando and the two exchanged words. Fernando then moved his head towards Jaiswal, with Jaiswal leaning in and their heads making contact.
The incident resulted in disciplinary action against both players, with each receiving a 25% match-fee penalty and one demerit point.
With Jayasuriya now also sanctioned, three players involved in separate incidents during the Colombo Test have accumulated disciplinary penalties from the ICC.
