Dharmendra Pradhan resigns as Union Education Minister amid nationwide protests over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak, marking a major political development in India’s education sector. On Saturday, Dharmendra Pradhan announced that he had submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a letter addressed to the nation’s youth, he stated that his decision was taken after considering the situation that had developed at Jantar Mantar and in several parts of the country. He emphasized that protecting students’ interests and maintaining national unity were among the key reasons behind stepping down from his ministerial position.

According to his statement, Pradhan has spent more than four decades working in education and public life. He highlighted his commitment to strengthening India’s education system and reiterated that education remains the foundation of a strong and developed nation.
Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pradhan thanked him for giving him the opportunity to serve as Union Education Minister. He described the experience as a privilege and acknowledged the government’s focus on education reforms during his tenure.
The resignation follows mounting pressure after the alleged NEET paper leak became a national issue. Students, parents, and several organizations raised concerns over examination integrity, demanding transparency and strict action against those responsible for any wrongdoing.

In his resignation letter, Pradhan stated that the protests had reached a stage where he believed his resignation would help prevent further disruption. He said his intention was to ensure that students’ futures were not affected by prolonged uncertainty or legal complications arising from the controversy.
He also appealed for peace, stating that young people should remain focused on their education and career goals instead of becoming trapped in prolonged disputes. According to him, India’s youth represent the country’s greatest strength and deserve a stable educational environment.
Pradhan further stated that he wanted to ensure that no anti-national elements could exploit the ongoing unrest. He stressed the importance of maintaining unity while allowing investigative agencies to complete their work independently.
Government Response to the NEET-UG 2026 Paper Leak
Addressing the controversy, Pradhan said the government acted immediately after reports of irregularities in the NEET UG 2026 examination surfaced. He stated that the matter was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a detailed investigation.
According to his statement, the government cancelled the affected examination and announced that a fresh examination would be conducted. He also revealed that beginning next year, the examination would be held in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode to strengthen security and reduce the possibility of paper leaks.
The proposed transition to CBT is expected to introduce stronger technological safeguards, improve monitoring during examinations, and enhance the overall transparency of the testing process.
Pradhan’s Remarks on Student Welfare
Throughout his letter, Pradhan repeatedly emphasized that student welfare remained his highest priority. He said he accepted responsibility from the very beginning and never attempted to distance himself from the controversy.
He maintained that deserving students should never suffer because of the actions of an examination mafia or any organized network involved in unfair practices. According to him, every meritorious student deserves an equal opportunity to compete fairly.
Pradhan also noted that the NEET-UG results announced on 16 July reflected the success of many students from economically weaker backgrounds. He argued that several deserving candidates had performed exceptionally well despite the controversy surrounding the examination.
Allegations of Misleading Students
Another important aspect of Pradhan’s letter involved allegations that certain individuals attempted to mislead students during the ongoing protests. Although he did not mention specific names, he claimed that misinformation created unnecessary confusion among candidates and their families.
