Government schools have long formed the backbone of India’s public education system, particularly in rural, tribal and economically disadvantaged regions where private schools remain limited or unaffordable. Yet, over the past several years, the number of government schools across the country has steadily declined as several States have merged, consolidated or closed institutions with low enrolment.
