The Indiana Fever continue to deliver some of the WNBA’s best basketball despite facing a series of off-court controversies, with players and coaches emphasizing that their primary focus remains on winning games. As the team prepares to host the Las Vegas Aces on Thursday, attention has once again shifted beyond basketball following comments made by guard Sophie Cunningham in a previously recorded interview.
Speaking before Wednesday’s practice in Indianapolis, Cunningham sought to steer the conversation back to the team’s on-court performance. Although she declined to revisit remarks that sparked debate over transgender athletes competing in women’s sports, the veteran guard expressed frustration that discussions surrounding the Fever often become dominated by issues unrelated to basketball.
Sophie Cunningham Urges Greater Focus on Basketball
Cunningham explained that the interview at the center of the latest controversy had been recorded in February and said she preferred to concentrate on the team’s current objectives rather than revisit old discussions.
“There’s just so much distraction,” Cunningham said before practice. “I think the WNBA media, all we ever do is cover everything except basketball. It’s like, what are we doing? There’s so much, like you can talk about other things. I think those are great stories. I think it shows fans, you know, who people are outside of the court. But I also think we’ve got to keep the main thing, the main thing.”
Before practice, Cunningham also spoke with Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve, the winningest coach in WNBA history, though she did not elaborate on the details of their conversation.
Fever Continue Strong Run Despite Outside Noise
While headlines have frequently focused on events away from the court, Indiana has quietly assembled one of the league’s strongest runs of form. Since July 1, the Fever have posted a 9-3 record, including an impressive 5-2 mark across two recent road trips.
Among the highlights of that stretch were two commanding victories over defending WNBA champions Las Vegas, winning by margins of 16 and 34 points during their Western Conference swing. Indiana now has an opportunity to complete a season sweep of the Aces when the teams meet in Indianapolis on Thursday.
The matchup also carries added significance after Las Vegas eliminated an injury-hit Indiana squad in last season’s conference semifinals, giving the Fever another opportunity to measure their progress against one of the league’s top teams.
Historic Offensive Form Boosts Indiana’s Confidence
Indiana’s recent success has been driven by one of the WNBA’s most productive offenses. The Fever’s five-game winning streak, which came to an end with a 108-100 defeat at the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday, matched the fourth-longest winning run in franchise history.
Despite that setback, the Fever enter Thursday’s contest with another milestone within reach. The team will attempt to extend its league-record streak of consecutive 100-point games to seven, underscoring the offensive consistency that has fueled its rise in recent weeks.
Record-Breaking Offense Driving Indiana’s Success
Indiana’s impressive form has been powered by one of the WNBA’s most productive offenses. The Fever are averaging 96.5 points per game this season, putting them on course to surpass the league’s single-season scoring record of 93.9 points per game set by the Phoenix Mercury in 2010.
The team’s attacking success has coincided with standout campaigns from All-Star guards Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell, along with All-Star center Aliyah Boston, all of whom are enjoying career-best seasons. Cunningham also has delivered some of the best numbers of her career, shooting 48.2% from the field and 45.2% from three-point range.
Cunningham believes Clark, Mitchell and Boston have all performed at a level worthy of consideration in the WNBA Most Valuable Player race.
Experience Helps Fever Handle Constant Attention
Cunningham credited the team’s ability to deal with intense public attention to experience and a strong locker-room culture. Having previously played alongside veterans Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner, she said she had learned the importance of protecting team unity despite outside distractions.
“My first six years (in the WNBA), I was with Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner and so that causes a lot of buzz on your team as well and so you just have to protect the locker room,” Cunningham said. “Then you come here and it was like 100 times more. So this year, we’re used to it. We’re tight in the locker room. We try to protect those walls like no other. We try to protect each other like no other.”
Fever Continue to Face Off-Court Challenges
The Fever have remained in the spotlight for reasons extending well beyond basketball over the past two seasons. Last year, much of the attention centered on player injuries, including Clark’s soft-tissue issues and Cunningham’s season-ending knee injury.
This season has brought a different set of headlines. A sideline exchange between Clark and head coach Stephanie White prompted speculation about their relationship, while Cunningham’s viral social media video and an on-court incident involving Alyssa Thomas generated widespread discussion. The contact involving Clark also prompted members of the U.S. Congress to send a letter to WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert.
More recently, Cunningham’s comments on transgender participation in women’s sports have led to demonstrations both supporting and opposing her views at Fever games. Cunningham said those events also led to a respectful conversation with Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve.
“She had stories about her point of view, and I had stories about my point of view, and we left with love and respect, and I think that’s what it’s all about,” Cunningham said.
Stephanie White Praises Team’s Unity
Head coach Stephanie White said the challenges have ultimately strengthened the Fever by encouraging players to rely on one another and remain focused on basketball. She believes overcoming difficult situations together has reinforced the team’s chemistry during a successful stretch of the season.
“Any time we have an opportunity to navigate challenges together, it reveals the character of who you are, and I think our group continues to stay together, continues to pull together,” White said.
White added that extended time together during recent road trips had also helped strengthen relationships within the squad. Her comments came one day before she was named the WNBA’s Coach of the Month for July.
Basketball Remains the Priority
Despite the constant public scrutiny surrounding the franchise, Cunningham said players have become accustomed to the attention that comes with representing one of the league’s most closely followed teams. She acknowledged that every action involving the Fever receives heightened attention but insisted the team’s focus has never shifted away from its goals on the court.
“I want to get back to basketball. It’s always been about basketball,” Cunningham said.
As Indiana prepares to host the Las Vegas Aces, the Fever will look to continue their strong run of form and ensure that their performances on the court remain the defining story of their season.
