Bruno Guimaraes joins Arsenal from Newcastle United

LONDON, Britain — Premier League champions Arsenal have signed Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes on a four-year contract with an option for an additional season, the club announced on Saturday, adding the Brazil international to Mikel Arteta’s midfield ahead of the new campaign.

British media have reported the transfer fee at around £75 million ($101.16 million). The 28-year-old midfielder arrives after more than four seasons at Newcastle, where he became one of the club’s most influential players.

Key Highlights

  • Arsenal have signed Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United on a four-year contract.
  • The deal includes an option for a further one-year extension.
  • British media reported a transfer fee of around £75 million.
  • Guimaraes made 195 appearances and scored 31 goals for Newcastle in all competitions.

Guimaraes Excited by Arsenal Challenge

Guimaraes said discussions with Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta and manager Mikel Arteta convinced him that a move to north London represented the right challenge.

The midfielder said he was looking forward to beginning his Arsenal career and highlighted the importance of squad depth as the club prepares for a demanding season.

“I am so excited to start. We have tough games to play this season, so the squad is going to be very, very important and I’m hopeful we can achieve our dreams.”

Newcastle Lose Another Key Figure

Guimaraes’ departure represents another significant change for Newcastle. The club have also seen Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali leave, while Eddie Howe stepped down as manager and was replaced by German coach Matthias Jaissle.

Guimaraes joined Newcastle from Olympique Lyonnais in January 2022 and played a major role in the club’s progress during his time in England.

What Guimaraes Brings to Arsenal

Guimaraes offers Arsenal experience in both defensive and attacking phases of midfield. His ability to operate as a holding midfielder or in a box-to-box role gives Arteta another tactical option.

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta said the Brazilian combines defensive work with creativity and attacking production, while also increasing competition within the squad.

“Bruno will allow Mikel to further develop our playing style and will also increase our internal competitiveness, which is essential for maintaining the standards required when we are aiming to win major trophies.”

Arsenal Midfield Gets More Depth

Guimaraes joins a midfield group that includes Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino and captain Martin Odegaard.

His versatility could allow Arteta to rotate his midfield more frequently and manage the workload of key players during a season in which Arsenal will be competing on multiple fronts.
