India celebrates a historic Super Saturday at the Commonwealth Games 2026 as President Murmu and PM Modi congratulate the country’s medal-winning athletes.

CWG 2026: President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated India’s medal-winning athletes after the country delivered a memorable “Super Saturday” at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. India enjoyed one of its most successful days of the Games, winning medals across boxing, athletics, para athletics and judo, while ending the penultimate day with an overall tally of 39 medals — 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze.

The day’s biggest highlight came in boxing, where India scripted history by recording its best-ever Commonwealth Games performance in the sport. The Indian contingent finished on top of the boxing medal standings with a record seven gold medals and three silver medals, surpassing the country’s previous best performance at the Games.

President Murmu Praises India’s Medal Winners

In a series of posts on X, President Droupadi Murmu congratulated every Indian medallist and described their achievements as a matter of national pride. She praised the athletes for their determination, commitment and outstanding performances that brought glory to the country on the international stage.

The President extended her congratulations to boxers Preeti Pawar, Jaismine Lamboria, Sakshi Chaudhary, Priya Ghanghas, Arundhati Choudhary, Sachin Siwach, Ankush Panghal, Lovlina Borgohain, Jadumani Singh and Narender Berwal. She also acknowledged the performances of para athletes Soman Rana and Shubham Juyal, triple jump medallists Praveen Chithravel and Selva Prabhu Thirumaran, judoka Unnati Sharma and long-distance runner Gulveer Singh.

Prime Minister Modi Hails India’s Sporting Excellence

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated every Indian medallist through individual posts on X, applauding their exceptional performances and dedication. He praised the country’s boxers for their historic campaign, celebrated Soman Rana’s landmark para athletics gold medal and commended the achievements of athletes across multiple disciplines.

The Prime Minister described the performances as inspirational and wished all the athletes continued success in their sporting careers, highlighting their contribution to India’s growing reputation in international sports.

India Creates History in Boxing

India’s most remarkable success came inside the boxing ring, where the contingent registered its finest-ever Commonwealth Games campaign by winning seven gold medals and three silver medals.

The seven gold medals were won by Preeti Pawar (Women’s 54kg), Jaismine Lamboria (Women’s 57kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (Women’s 51kg), Priya Ghanghas (Women’s 60kg), Arundhati Choudhary (Women’s 70kg), Sachin Siwach (Men’s 60kg) and Ankush Panghal (Men’s 80kg).

India’s silver medallists included Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain (Women’s 75kg), Jadumani Singh (Men’s 55kg) and Narender Berwal (Men’s 90+kg), completing a record haul of ten boxing medals.

Standout Boxing Performances

Ankush Panghal secured India’s seventh boxing gold after defeating England’s Dimeji Shittu 4-1 by split decision in the men’s 80kg final.

Sachin Siwach produced one of the day’s most dramatic victories by recovering from an early deficit against Namibia’s Tryagain Morning Ndevelo in the men’s 60kg final before sealing a thrilling 3-2 split-decision win.

Arundhati Choudhary dominated England’s Chantelle Reid 5-0 in the women’s 70kg final, while Preeti Pawar defeated Canada’s Scarlett Savannah Delgado 5-0 in the women’s 54kg title bout, even recording a knockdown during her commanding performance.

Reigning world champion Jaismine Lamboria defeated Northern Ireland’s Michaela Walsh 5-0 in the women’s 57kg final, while Sakshi Chaudhary outclassed England’s Ruby White by another unanimous 5-0 verdict in the women’s 51kg final. Priya Ghanghas completed India’s golden run by defeating Canada’s Marie-Bathoul Al-Ahmadieh 4-1 in the women’s 60kg final.

Lovlina Borgohain narrowly missed out on gold after losing to Australia’s Emma-Sue Greentree in the women’s 75kg final. Jadumani Singh finished with silver after his defeat against Australia’s Jye Dixon, while Narender Berwal also secured silver after losing to England’s Damar Thomas in the men’s super-heavyweight final.

Para Athletics and Athletics Add to India’s Medal Tally

India also celebrated success in para athletics as Soman Rana created history by winning the country’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in the men’s F57 shot put event. Shubham Juyal added a silver medal in the same competition, giving India a memorable one-two finish.

In athletics, Praveen Chithravel claimed silver and Selva Prabhu Thirumaran secured bronze in the men’s triple jump, producing a historic double podium finish for India. Distance runner Gulveer Singh added another bronze in the men’s 5,000 metres to become India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games medallist in the event.

Judo Success and Other Results

India’s medal tally also received a boost in judo, where Unnati Sharma defeated South Africa’s Skye Knoester to win bronze in the women’s -63kg category.

Harsh Tokas narrowly missed out on a podium finish after losing the bronze medal contest in the men’s -81kg category to Australia’s Keishin Ochi.

Elsewhere, Karanjit Singh Maan and Inunganbi Takhellambam exited during the judo repechage rounds, while cyclists David Beckham, Ronaldo Singh and Rojit Singh were eliminated during the men’s sprint qualification.

In athletics, Dev Meena and Kuldeep Kumar finished outside the medals in the men’s pole vault, the mixed 4x400m relay team placed sixth, para athlete Ramesh Shanmugam finished seventh in the men’s T54 1,500m, Priyanka Goswami finished fourth in the women’s 10,000m race walk and Ravina Gayakwad was disqualified.

India Eyes Strong Finish on Final Day

India heads into the final day of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games with an overall tally of 39 medals (13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze). Despite the reduced sports programme, the Indian contingent remains in contention to further improve its medal count.

On the concluding day, medal hopes will rest on judokas Ishroop Narang, Avtar Singh and Yash Ghanghas, along with cyclists Dinesh Kumar, Harshveer Singh Sekhon, Ronaldo Singh Laitonjam and para cyclist Lisha Das.

The outstanding performances across multiple disciplines on Super Saturday have reinforced India’s impressive campaign in Glasgow and provided another significant milestone for Indian sport at the Commonwealth Games.
