KL Rahul backed for key role in India Sri Lanka Test series
KL Rahul has been backed by Morne Morkel to play an important role for India in the Sri Lanka Test series.

GALLE, Sri Lanka — India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has backed KL Rahul to play a key role in the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, pointing to the wicketkeeper-batter’s experience and his ability to help younger players understand the conditions in Galle.

  • KL Rahul is expected to be an important part of India’s Test plans against Sri Lanka.
  • Rahul is the only batter from India’s 2017 touring side still part of the current squad.
  • Morne Morkel said India’s early arrival has helped players prepare individual plans for Galle.
  • India could consider three spinners as the Test progresses on the Galle surface.

KL Rahul’s Experience Could Help India in Galle

KL Rahul brings unique experience into the Sri Lanka series, having previously toured the country with India’s 2017 Test side. Morkel believes that familiarity can be particularly useful for a squad containing several younger players.

The bowling coach highlighted Rahul’s recent batting performances and his ability to communicate with teammates. According to Morkel, the senior batter can share his understanding of the conditions and help players prepare their plans before facing Sri Lanka.

India Used Early Arrival to Prepare

India reached Sri Lanka well before the opening Test, giving the players additional time to work on their individual preparations. Morkel said the extended preparation period was intended to help the squad understand how to score on the Galle surface.

The coaching staff has focused on allowing players to develop specific plans for the conditions rather than relying on a single approach. Morkel indicated that the team has used the preparation period to understand individual games and identify suitable scoring methods.

Three Spinners Could Be an Option

Morkel also discussed India’s bowling combination ahead of the first Test. With Galle traditionally associated with spin, he suggested that playing three spinners could be considered depending on how the conditions develop.

India have several spin options in their squad, including Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Manav Suthar. Morkel explained that the team’s spin attack offers an attacking route while seam bowling can be used from the other end to maintain pressure.

Galle Surface Expected to Change During Test

According to Morkel, the pitch initially appeared to be in good condition, but he expects the surface to offer different challenges as the Test progresses. India are therefore preparing for conditions that could change during the five-day contest.

The bowling coach stressed the importance of mental preparation, long batting periods and disciplined bowling. For India, adapting to the surface and maintaining consistency will be central to their plans once the Test begins.

India Enter Series After Warm-Up Win

India have already had a positive start to their Sri Lanka tour. They defeated Sri Lanka Cricket XI by six wickets in the three-day warm-up match before heading into the opening Test.

Devdutt Padikkal was the standout performer in that game, scoring an unbeaten 142. His innings provides another selection option for India as the team finalises its combination for the Test series.

First Test Begins on August 15

The opening Test of the two-match series will begin on August 15 at the Galle International Stadium. India will be led by Shubman Gill, with KL Rahul serving as vice-captain.

India’s squad comprises Shubman Gill (Captain), KL Rahul (Vice-Captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Devdutt Padikkal, Saransh Jain, Auqib Nabi and Sarfaraz Khan.
