Opposition to Protest in Parliament Over Student Crackdown, Demands Amit Shah’s Statement on Police Action and Ram Mandir Donation Allegations

Opposition parties are set to stage a joint protest in Parliament on Tuesday as the Monsoon Session enters its eleventh day, pressing the Centre to respond to two issues that have triggered political confrontation in recent days. Leaders from opposition parties in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will gather at Makar Dwar at 10:30 am to demand a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the police action during the July 20 student protest in Delhi and to raise allegations concerning donations made to the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

According to party leaders, the demonstration will focus on seeking the government’s response to the alleged use of force against students during the protest held on July 20. The opposition also plans to question the Centre over allegations of misappropriation of donations made to the Ram Mandir, an issue that has become a fresh point of political debate.

Kharge Seeks Response from Prime Minister and Home Minister

Earlier on Monday, Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to address Parliament and clarify the government’s position on both issues.

“We want the Prime Minister and the Home Minister to come to the House and present their views. What do they have to say? There is the issue of the missing funds. What is their position on it?”

Kharge also criticised the government’s handling of the July 20 student protest at Jantar Mantar, alleging that security forces used excessive force against demonstrators.

“Students were beaten, pellet guns were used, tear gas was fired, and every possible measure was taken against them. Why did this happen? For what reason? Both the Prime Minister and the Home Minister should take responsibility and make statements in the House.”

Opposition Accuses PM of Avoiding Parliament

Continuing his criticism, Kharge alleged that Prime Minister Modi was avoiding discussions inside Parliament and said the government should respond directly to lawmakers instead of making public statements elsewhere.

“The Prime Minister is not even willing to come into the House, and that is an insult to the people who elected us. It is an insult to democracy… When the Prime Minister wakes up at 12 or 12:30, he posts his views on Instagram. Instead, he should come to the House and say the same thing, or call a press conference… This is an insult to Parliament and an insult to the people.”

Kharge said people who elected opposition representatives expect answers from the government inside Parliament regarding issues being raised during the Monsoon Session.

Demands Raised on Social Media

In a post on X, Kharge reiterated the opposition’s demands, saying the Home Minister should explain the alleged lathi-charge and use of pellet guns against students during the July 20 protest. He also called on the Prime Minister to respond to allegations concerning donations made to the Shri Ram Mandir while referring to the Trust’s oversight.

Political Row Continues

The opposition has intensified its attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the police action during the July 20 protest, alleging that Delhi Police resorted to lathi-charge and pellet guns against demonstrators during the march led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP).

The Ram Mandir donation issue has also remained at the centre of political exchanges. Last week, Independent MP Pappu Yadav triggered controversy after impersonating a priest and collecting donations while criticising the government over the alleged Ram Mandir donation theft issue.

Tuesday’s protest is expected to add to the confrontational atmosphere in Parliament as opposition parties seek a formal response from the government on both matters during the ongoing Monsoon Session.
