Mackay, Australia — The Australia vs Bangladesh 2nd Test produced a dramatic opening day in Mackay on August 22, with 18 wickets falling as Bangladesh were bowled out for 64 before Australia reached 165/8 at stumps. Australia, after electing to field, ended the day with a 101-run lead.

Bangladesh Collapse to 64

Australia made an immediate impact after choosing to bowl first. Mitchell Starc removed Shadman Islam with the first ball of the innings and continued to dismantle Bangladesh’s top order.

Tanzid Hasan was dismissed for a duck in Starc’s second over, followed immediately by Najmul Hossain Shanto. Mominul Haque was the fourth Bangladesh batter to fall, leaving the visitors at 10/4.

Starc then removed Litton Das for another duck and completed his six-wicket haul when Shoriful Islam was caught behind late in the innings. Bangladesh’s lower order provided some resistance, but the innings ended at 64 in 34 overs.

Taijul Islam remained unbeaten on 11, while Shoriful Islam made 14 from 19 balls. Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored 11 and Hasan Mahmud added 10.

Mitchell Starc Takes Six Wickets

Starc finished with extraordinary figures of 10 overs, six maidens, 12 runs and six wickets. Pat Cummins supported him with three wickets for 25 runs, while Josh Hazlewood took one wicket for 18 runs.

Starc’s victims were Shadman Islam, Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mominul Haque, Litton Das and Shoriful Islam.

Australia Lose Eight Wickets Despite Green Fifty

Australia also found batting difficult once Bangladesh began bowling. Travis Head made 22 before Shoriful Islam bowled him, while Matt Renshaw scored eight before falling to Taskin Ahmed.

Marnus Labuschagne was dismissed for four and Steven Smith provided Australia’s strongest support with 42 from 74 balls. Smith’s dismissal at 118/4 opened the door for another Bangladesh fightback.

Shoriful Islam then produced a superb spell. He removed Beau Webster for a golden duck, Pat Cummins without scoring and Mitchell Starc for one. Australia fell from 118/4 to 148/8.

Cameron Green held the innings together. He reached his half-century from 80 balls and finished unbeaten on 51 from 81 deliveries, including eight fours.

Nathan Lyon joined Green and remained unbeaten on 10 from 28 balls. The pair guided Australia through the final overs, with Australia closing on 165/8 after 40 overs.
