India has launched an ambitious national initiative to accelerate offshore oil and gas exploration with the approval of the Samudra Manthan – National Offshore Exploration Scheme. Approved on July 31, 2026, the mission aims to increase domestic hydrocarbon production, reduce dependence on imported crude oil, and strengthen the country’s long-term energy security through large-scale investment in deepwater exploration and offshore infrastructure.
