Heavy Rain Claims Four Lives in Kerala as Landslides, Wall Collapse and Power Disruptions Hit Several Districts

Torrential rainfall continued to batter several parts of Kerala on Saturday, claiming four lives and causing widespread damage to infrastructure, roads and residential areas. The intense overnight rainfall triggered landslides, debris flows and the collapse of a retaining wall in Malappuram district, prompting authorities to step up emergency response measures across the affected regions.

One of the major incidents was reported from Chembakkuthu in Edavanna, where a concrete retaining wall of a house under construction collapsed onto a nearby road following heavy rainfall. The incident occurred at around 6 a.m. near Jamia College and disrupted traffic after large chunks of debris blocked the roadway.

Retaining Wall Collapse Damages Road and Electricity Infrastructure

The collapsed retaining wall belonged to a house under construction owned by Mustafa. Besides blocking vehicular movement, the falling debris also damaged electricity poles and overhead power lines, disrupting power supply in parts of the locality. Local authorities and utility officials began clearing the debris and assessing the extent of structural damage.

Edavanna Grama Panchayat President Suneera Samad, accompanied by elected representatives and government officials, visited the site to inspect the affected area and review the immediate restoration work. Authorities are monitoring nearby structures to ensure there is no further risk of collapse as rainfall continues.

Four Deaths Reported as Heavy Rain Triggers Landslides

According to officials of the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), the ongoing spell of heavy rain has claimed four lives across the state. Member Secretary Sekhar Lukose Kuriakose said two fatalities were reported from Idukki district and two others from Kottayam district.

He noted that the heaviest rainfall occurred between late Friday night and early Saturday morning, triggering multiple landslides and debris flows, particularly in hilly and slope-cut regions. Several houses, roads and local infrastructure suffered damage due to soil erosion and the movement of debris caused by the continuous downpour.

KSDMA Monitors Situation as Rainfall Continues Across Kerala

Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) officials said they are closely monitoring weather conditions and the impact of continuous rainfall across vulnerable districts. Member Secretary Sekhar Lukose Kuriakose stated that although the rainfall caused landslides and significant property damage, the number of fatalities remained relatively limited considering the intensity of the weather event.

Officials observed that the worst-affected locations were hilly regions and slope-cut areas, where saturated soil increased the risk of landslides and debris movement. Disaster response teams have been coordinating with district administrations to assess damage, identify vulnerable locations and provide assistance wherever required.

Health Department Calls Emergency Review Meeting

With heavy rain expected to continue, Kerala Health Minister K. Muraleedharan directed the Health Department to convene an emergency meeting to strengthen preparedness in affected districts. The online review meeting, chaired by Health Department Director Dr. Meenakshi, was scheduled to bring together District Medical Officers and National Health Mission (NHM) District Programme Managers.

The meeting focused on reviewing the functioning of relief camps, availability of medical teams, emergency healthcare services and disease prevention measures. Officials also discussed the need to ensure adequate supplies of medicines, drinking water, sanitation facilities and medical support for people displaced by the heavy rainfall.

Authorities Intensify Relief and Restoration Efforts

District administrations, local self-government institutions and emergency response agencies have intensified restoration work in rain-affected areas. Teams have been deployed to remove debris from blocked roads, restore damaged electricity infrastructure and monitor vulnerable locations where additional landslides could occur if rainfall persists.

Authorities have appealed to residents, especially those living in landslide-prone and hilly regions, to remain alert, follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall. Officials said further decisions regarding relief measures and emergency response will be taken based on continuous weather assessments and the evolving situation in each affected district.
