The judicial commission report on the November 2024 Sambhal violence has emerged as a fresh political flashpoint in Uttar Pradesh, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) using its findings to target the Samajwadi Party (SP) ahead of the state assembly elections due early next year. The report, tabled in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly on August 5, concludes that the violence was “pre-planned”, gives a clean chit to the police and district administration, and points to the alleged involvement of SP leaders in the law and order breakdown.
