Police have initiated proceedings after the remains of a 57-year-old woman were found at her residence in Bengaluru.

BENGALURU, India — The skeletal remains of a 57-year-old woman were found at her residence in Bengaluru’s Havanur Layout, police said on Saturday. The woman, identified as Dakshayini, had reportedly been living alone for several years after the deaths of her husband and son.

Woman found dead at Bengaluru residence

The incident was reported on August 7 from Havanur Layout, which comes under the jurisdiction of Bagalgunte police station, according to police officials cited by PTI.

The deceased was identified as Dakshayini, who was originally from Saundatti taluk in Belagavi district.

Police subsequently informed her brother, Mahesh Basappa, about the discovery. He visited the residence and identified his sister.

She had been living alone for years

According to the statement given by Mahesh, Dakshayini had been living by herself for several years following the death of her husband in 2017.

Police also said she had not remained in contact with her family for around two years before her death.

Her brother reportedly told investigators that he did not suspect anyone in connection with the death.

Family reported earlier mental health treatment

Mahesh told police that Dakshayini had developed mental health difficulties following the death of her son in 2005.

According to his statement, she received treatment at hospitals in Bengaluru and Shivamogga, where doctors diagnosed her with schizophrenia.

She also spent approximately four months at a rehabilitation centre as part of her treatment, police said.

Police register unnatural death report

Police said an unnatural death report has been registered under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

Further proceedings have been initiated to establish the circumstances surrounding the death. Police have not indicated any suspicion of foul play based on the information currently available.

Case highlights concerns around people living alone

The discovery has also drawn attention to the circumstances of people who live alone and may have limited contact with relatives or wider support networks.

In Dakshayini’s case, police said she had been living alone for years and had not been in contact with her family for an extended period.
