PM Modi Launches ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’, Calls for Nationwide Movement Against Substance Abuse

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched the ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’, a nationwide campaign aimed at mobilising young people against substance abuse and encouraging citizens across the country to participate in building a drug-free India.

Addressing more than one crore youth through a nationwide video conference connected across over 28,000 locations, the Prime Minister said the campaign extends beyond individual well-being and is closely linked to the welfare of families, society and the nation. He stressed that achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat requires a physically fit, mentally strong and confident young generation free from addiction and destructive habits.

“Today, as the nation has set the goal of a Viksit Bharat, it is imperative that the country’s youth remain physically and mentally fit, brimming with self-confidence, and permanently steer clear of destructive habits like drugs,” the Prime Minister said.

Campaign Expands from Kashi Pilot to Nationwide Initiative

PM Modi recalled that the initiative was launched as a pilot project in Kashi last year and has now grown into a nationwide movement with the support of more than 125 spiritual organisations and several non-governmental organisations under the Kashi Declaration.

He announced that the campaign will run for 100 weeks, with dedicated activities scheduled every Sunday to encourage public participation and create sustained awareness against substance abuse.

The programme will include sports competitions, cultural events, meditation sessions, awareness campaigns and community engagement activities. According to the Prime Minister, the next 100 Sundays will become “100 strong steps” towards achieving a completely drug-free India.

PM Congratulates Youth for Taking Anti-Drug Pledge

Congratulating millions of young people who have already taken the anti-drug pledge, PM Modi urged them to carry the message of a drug-free lifestyle to schools, colleges and local communities. He described India’s youth as the country’s “Amrit generation” and said their innovation, talent and determination would play a vital role in achieving the vision of a developed India by 2047.

The Prime Minister noted that Indian youth are making remarkable contributions in sectors such as startups, artificial intelligence, sports and space exploration, but warned that substance abuse has the potential to destroy careers, weaken families and slow the country’s progress.

PM Modi Highlights Need for Prevention, Rehabilitation and Family Support

Emphasising that substance abuse should never receive social acceptance, the Prime Minister said India’s cultural and spiritual traditions have consistently discouraged the use of intoxicants. He urged society to work collectively to protect every young person from falling into the trap of addiction.

PM Modi underlined that rehabilitation and community support are equally important in tackling substance abuse. He said yoga, meditation, strong family support systems and rehabilitation centres can play a crucial role in helping individuals recover from addiction and rebuild their lives.

Appealing directly to parents, the Prime Minister urged families not to hide addiction because of social stigma or concerns about reputation. Instead, he encouraged them to seek timely medical assistance and professional support whenever required.

“We must always remember, if a child in the house falls victim to addiction, do not hide it under the guise of social prestige. Seek help from whoever is needed and try to free your child from addiction with medical help,” PM Modi said.

He also stressed the importance of maintaining open communication within families, saying parents should build trust with their children so that problems can be identified early and addressed before they escalate into addiction.

Educational Institutions Asked to Lead Awareness Drive

The Prime Minister called upon professors, teachers and educational institutions to actively participate in the nationwide campaign. He urged colleges and universities to regularly discuss the dangers of drug abuse alongside academic activities and organise awareness programmes on campuses.

According to PM Modi, educational institutions can play a significant role in preventing substance abuse by creating informed, supportive and responsible environments for students.

He further appealed to society to respect and encourage individuals who successfully overcome addiction, describing recovery as an act of courage and resilience rather than a sign of weakness.

Government to Continue Crackdown on Drug Trafficking

Concluding his address, the Prime Minister assured the country that the government would continue its nationwide action against drug traffickers and smuggling networks. Referring to large-scale drug seizures and enforcement operations conducted across different parts of India, he reiterated the government’s commitment to eliminating the illegal drug trade.

Expressing confidence in India’s young generation, PM Modi said the collective participation of citizens, educational institutions, spiritual organisations and enforcement agencies would help build a healthier, stronger and drug-free nation while contributing to the broader goal of achieving Viksit Bharat by 2047.
