Adley Rutschman begins rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester
Adley Rutschman has started a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester as he works toward his Boston Red Sox debut.

BOSTON, Massachusetts, USA — The Boston Red Sox have sent newly acquired catcher Adley Rutschman on a rehab assignment to Triple-A Worcester, moving the three-time All-Star closer to making his debut for his new team.

  • Rehab assignment: Rutschman has joined Triple-A Worcester as he works his way back from a left wrist injury.
  • Trade arrival: Boston acquired the catcher from the Baltimore Orioles on Monday along with Jake Rodgers and cash.
  • 2026 numbers: Rutschman was batting .251 with eight home runs and 47 RBIs in 67 games for Baltimore before his injury.
  • Red Sox surge: Boston has gone 32-5 since June 25 and has moved strongly into playoff contention.

Rutschman moves closer to Red Sox debut

The rehab assignment represents another step toward Rutschman joining Boston’s major-league lineup. The 28-year-old catcher was placed on the injured list on July 20 because of a left wrist injury.

Rutschman was scheduled to be in the leadoff spot for Worcester on Saturday and was expected to catch five innings as he continues his return from the injury.

Red Sox acquire Rutschman from Orioles

Boston acquired Rutschman from Baltimore on Monday as part of a deal that also brought catcher Jake Rodgers and cash to the Red Sox.

In exchange, Baltimore received Carlos Narvaez, three minor-league players and a player to be named later.

The move brought one of the established catchers in the Orioles organization into a Boston team that has rapidly improved its position in the playoff race.

Rutschman’s 2026 season with Baltimore

Before going on the injured list, Rutschman appeared in 67 games for Baltimore and was hitting .251. He had eight home runs and 47 RBIs during the season.

The 28-year-old has been selected as an All-Star three times. Across five seasons and 572 games with the Orioles, he has compiled a .254 career batting average with 69 home runs and 277 RBIs.

Boston riding strong run into playoff contention

The Red Sox have surged into playoff contention during a remarkable stretch of form. Boston has gone 32-5 since June 25, giving the team significant momentum as Rutschman works toward joining the major-league roster.

His return will add another experienced option behind the plate once he completes the necessary steps in his rehabilitation assignment.

What comes next for Rutschman

Rutschman’s appearance for Worcester is focused on getting him back into game action following his wrist injury. He was expected to catch five innings on Saturday, providing an opportunity to evaluate his progress before his eventual Red Sox debut.
