Ben Shelton celebrates after reaching the ATP Washington quarterfinals where he will face Alejandro Tabilo.
Ben Shelton celebrates his comeback victory over Ugo Humbert to reach the ATP Washington quarterfinals, where he will take on Alejandro Tabilo.

Second seed Ben Shelton booked his place in the quarterfinals of the ATP Washington tournament after battling back from a set down to defeat France’s Ugo Humbert on Thursday. The American will now face Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo in a left-handed showdown for a place in the semifinals of the Mubadala DC Open.

Shelton Shows Character to Overcome Humbert

Shelton’s path to the last eight was far from straightforward. The 23-year-old lost a closely contested opening-set tie-break against Humbert but responded with greater control in the next two sets, sealing a 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-4 comeback victory. The result underlined his ability to raise his level under pressure after an inconsistent start.

Although Shelton landed just over 62 percent of his first serves, he remained difficult to break throughout the contest. He won more than 70 percent of his total service points and faced only one break of serve during the match, allowing him to dictate the crucial moments and complete the turnaround.

Third Straight Washington Quarterfinal for Ben Shelton

The victory sends Shelton into his third consecutive quarterfinal at the Washington tournament, continuing his strong record at the ATP 500 event. It also marks his eighth ATP Tour quarterfinal appearance of the 2026 season, highlighting the consistency he has shown across the campaign.

Washington has become one of Shelton’s most successful stops on the ATP calendar, with the American once again producing results on hard courts as the North American swing gathers momentum.

Alejandro Tabilo Awaits in the Last Eight

Standing between Shelton and a semifinal place is Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo, who progressed after defeating France’s Terence Atmane in straight sets. Tabilo secured a 6-3, 7-6(6) victory to reach his fifth ATP Tour quarterfinal of the season.

Like Shelton, Tabilo is a left-handed player who relies on a powerful serve and aggressive baseline game. Their similar playing styles are expected to produce an entertaining contest, with both players looking to control points early behind strong service games.

Contrasting Hard-Court Records

While Tabilo has shown improvement on hard courts, his recent record on the surface remains relatively modest. According to the supplied source material, the Chilean has compiled a 13-12 hard-court record over the past 52 weeks and owns a career record of 40-45 on the surface.

The same analysis suggests Shelton enters the matchup with advantages beyond his serve, pointing to the American’s stronger all-around game and ability to capitalize on limited break opportunities against quality opponents.

Quarterfinal Carries Significant Momentum

With the US hard-court season gathering pace ahead of major tournaments later in the summer, both players will view Washington as an opportunity to build confidence. Shelton has gradually improved after two demanding matches in the tournament, while Tabilo has earned his place in the quarterfinals through composed performances.

The winner of Friday’s contest will advance to the semifinals of the ATP Washington event and continue the pursuit of one of the biggest titles of the North American hard-court swing.
