Deepika added India’s fourth goal in the 38th minute with a fierce tomahawk, taking her tournament tally to two goals.
The Indian attack then produced two more goals in quick succession late in the third quarter. Lalremsiami scored in the 44th minute before Sakshi Rana found the net again a minute later, putting India 6-0 ahead.
South Africa score consolation goal
South Africa eventually found a response in the 55th minute. Kayla de Waal converted after a deflection from a penalty-corner attempt fell into her path.
The goal, however, did little to change the outcome as India completed a comprehensive 6-1 victory.
India surpass previous World Cup record
The six-goal performance surpassed India’s previous biggest victory at the Women’s Hockey World Cup. That record had been a 4-1 win over Spain during the inaugural 1974 edition.
The result also strengthened India’s position at the top of Pool D and significantly improved their prospects of reaching the second round.
