WASHINGTON, U.S. — The Trump administration will impose new tariffs on imported drones and drone components, with the White House saying the measures are intended to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign suppliers and address national security concerns. The tariffs, announced on August 13, 2026, will cover products from several major U.S. allies and are scheduled to begin taking effect within 21 days.

  • A 100% tariff will apply to certain larger or particularly sensitive drones.
  • Smaller drones will face a 25% tariff.
  • Drones and components from the EU, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland and Taiwan will face a 15% tariff.
  • Drone imports from the UK will face a 10% tariff.

Trump announces new drone import tariffs

President Donald Trump signed a proclamation imposing different tariff rates based on the size, capabilities and origin of imported drones. The White House said the highest rate would target drones considered particularly sensitive from a national security perspective.

Under the new measures, certain drones of a specified size or with specified capabilities will face a 100% ad valorem tariff. Smaller drones will be subject to a 25% tariff.

The administration also established country-specific rates for several foreign suppliers. Imports from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland and Taiwan will face a 15% tariff, while drones from the United Kingdom will carry a 10% tariff.

White House cites U.S. reliance on foreign drones

Trump said Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick had examined the impact of imports of unmanned aircraft systems, commonly known as drones, and their components.

According to Trump’s proclamation, Lutnick concluded that foreign producers have a substantial presence in the U.S. drone market and that the country is too dependent on overseas sources for drones and related components.

The administration also said certain foreign-made drones and components present security and safety risks. The proclamation stated that domestic U.S. production is not sufficient to meet the country’s security requirements.

Tariffs target drones and selected components

The new policy distinguishes between particularly sensitive drone products and other components. The White House said the main tariffs will take effect 21 days after the proclamation is signed.

For drone components that are not considered particularly sensitive, the tariffs will begin 180 days after the proclamation. A separate 180-day timeline applies to products approved by the Pentagon for an exemption from the Federal Communications Commission’s “Covered List” within 20 days of the proclamation.

Tariffs remain central to Trump’s trade policy

The drone measures add another product category to the Trump administration’s broader use of tariffs as a tool of foreign and trade policy. Trump has continued to rely on tariffs despite legal setbacks and criticism from some analysts.

The decision is also significant because the new duties affect suppliers from countries and regions that maintain close economic and security relationships with the United States. The White House has nevertheless framed the policy around domestic production capacity and national security.

What happens next

The first phase of the drone tariffs is scheduled to take effect 21 days after Trump’s proclamation. Other affected components will receive longer implementation periods of 180 days, depending on their classification under the administration’s rules.

The measures are designed to encourage greater reliance on domestic drone manufacturing while placing additional costs on imported products. The immediate impact will depend on how importers and manufacturers respond to the new tariff structure.
