MOSCOW, Russia — External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin on Monday during his two-day official visit to Russia, conveying Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s good wishes and a personal communication. Jaishankar also briefed Putin on the outcome of the India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission meeting and highlighted growth in bilateral economic cooperation.

Jaishankar conveys Modi’s message to Putin
Jaishankar began the meeting by conveying Modi’s good wishes and handing Putin a personal communication from the Indian Prime Minister. He also presented the Russian President with an update on the work of the India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission.
According to Jaishankar, discussions under the commission covered economic cooperation, trade, energy, fertilisers, nuclear issues and other areas. He said India’s economic cooperation with Russia had grown significantly.
Jaishankar also conveyed Modi’s plans for further engagement with Putin, saying the Prime Minister looks forward to meeting the Russian President at the SCO Summit and welcoming him to India for the BRICS Summit.
Putin highlights growing India-Russia ties
Putin said Jaishankar’s visit reflected the level of relations established between Russia and India over several decades. He pointed to continued cooperation across governmental, interparliamentary and economic areas.
The Russian President said bilateral trade had increased this year after declining slightly last year. He attributed the improvement partly, and perhaps primarily, to Modi’s personal attention to the development of India-Russia relations.
Putin also asked Jaishankar to convey his best wishes to Modi and said he hoped to meet the Indian Prime Minister soon within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
Trade, energy and fertilisers discussed
Putin referred to the discussions held earlier between Jaishankar and First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov under the intergovernmental commission. Energy, fertiliser supplies, nuclear energy and high-technology cooperation were among the issues on the agenda.
Putin said Russia was working to increase fertiliser supplies for Indian farmers and agriculture. He also described progress in nuclear energy, high-technology cooperation and other areas as steady.
India to host BRICS Summit in New Delhi
India is scheduled to host the 18th BRICS Summit next month in New Delhi. The grouping currently comprises Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.
The summit is expected to provide a platform for member countries to discuss common interests and strengthen cooperation on global and regional issues, including political and economic governance.
Jaishankar’s two-day Russia visit
Jaishankar is visiting Russia from August 23 to 24 at the invitation of Denis Manturov. Earlier on Monday, he co-chaired the 27th Session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation with Manturov.
The Kremlin meeting was attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office Maxim Oreshkin, Manturov and Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov. India’s Ambassador to Russia Vinay Kumar and MEA official Mayank Singh represented the Indian side.
The India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission has separate divisions dealing with trade, economic, scientific, technological and cultural cooperation, as well as military and military-technical cooperation. The two countries have continued to maintain a broad bilateral partnership extending beyond traditional areas such as military, nuclear and space cooperation.
