Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) General N.S. Raja Subramani on Monday inaugurated the Fourth Edition of the Tri-Services Future Warfare Course at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi, stressing that India’s Armed Forces must remain prepared for rapidly evolving security challenges and adapt to the changing character of warfare. Addressing the inaugural session, the CDS highlighted the growing influence of advanced technologies and the need for continuous innovation to strengthen the country’s defence capabilities.

During his keynote address, General Raja Subramani said future conflicts are expected to become more complex as technological advancements reshape military operations across multiple domains. He noted that modern warfare is no longer limited to conventional battlefields and requires armed forces to anticipate emerging threats while developing the capabilities needed to respond effectively.

Changing Nature of Warfare Demands Constant Adaptation

The CDS observed that the global security environment is evolving rapidly, making preparedness and adaptability essential for national defence. He said India’s Armed Forces must continuously modernise their operational strategies and strengthen their ability to respond to future challenges in an increasingly dynamic strategic landscape.

According to General Raja Subramani, technological innovation is becoming one of the defining factors of future military operations. He emphasised that defence planning should remain forward-looking so that the Armed Forces are equipped to meet both conventional and emerging forms of conflict.

Emerging Technologies Reshaping Military Operations

Highlighting the role of technology in modern warfare, the CDS said artificial intelligence, cyber capabilities, autonomous systems, information warfare, space technologies and data-driven decision-making are expected to play an increasingly important role in determining the outcome of future conflicts.

He noted that these technological developments are transforming military planning, operational execution and strategic decision-making. As a result, India’s defence establishment must remain at the forefront of innovation to ensure that its forces are capable of responding effectively to future operational requirements.

General Raja Subramani said embracing advanced technologies would strengthen India’s defence preparedness while improving the Armed Forces’ ability to operate across multiple domains in an integrated manner.

Greater Jointness Among the Three Services Highlighted

The CDS also underlined the importance of deeper cooperation among the Army, Navy and Air Force. He said enhanced jointness and integration between the three Services would remain a key requirement for building a modern and capable military force prepared to address future security challenges.

In addition to inter-service cooperation, General Raja Subramani stressed the need to strengthen partnerships with industry, academia and the research community. According to him, collaboration between these sectors will play an important role in developing new technologies, strengthening defence capabilities and supporting India’s long-term military preparedness.

Four-Week Course Brings Together Military and Civilian Experts

The Fourth Edition of the Tri-Services Future Warfare Course has been organised by the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS). The four-week programme brings together officers from the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force, along with representatives from government departments, industry, academia and strategic institutions.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the course is designed to encourage the exchange of ideas among military professionals and experts from different sectors. The objective is to build a broader understanding of future security challenges while promoting cooperation between the armed forces and organisations involved in defence research, technology and policymaking.

Participants to Study Future Battlefield Scenarios

During the programme, participants will take part in discussions and academic sessions covering a wide range of subjects related to future warfare. The curriculum includes geopolitics, emerging technologies, cognitive warfare, cyber warfare, multi-domain operations, scenario-building and technology-enabled military operations.

These discussions are intended to help officers and experts understand how rapidly changing technologies and geopolitical developments could influence future conflicts. The course also seeks to strengthen strategic thinking and improve preparedness for complex operational environments.

Collaboration Seen as Key to Defence Preparedness

General N.S. Raja Subramani reiterated that close coordination between the Armed Forces, industry, research organisations and academic institutions will be essential for building future defence capabilities. He said innovation cannot be driven by the military alone and requires contributions from multiple sectors working together.

The CDS emphasised that stronger partnerships would support the development of advanced technologies, improve operational readiness and enhance India’s ability to respond to evolving security threats across land, sea, air, cyber and space domains.

Focus on Building Future-Ready Armed Forces

As warfare continues to evolve with the growing use of artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, cyber capabilities and space-based technologies, the Tri-Services Future Warfare Course aims to prepare military leaders for the changing security environment. By bringing together officers from all three Services with experts from government, industry and academia, the programme seeks to promote integrated thinking and encourage innovative approaches to national defence.

The inauguration of the fourth edition of the course reflects the continued focus of India’s defence establishment on strengthening military preparedness through professional education, technological awareness and inter-service cooperation. Officials believe such initiatives will help equip the Armed Forces with the knowledge and capabilities required to address future operational challenges effectively.
