Dehradun bridge collapse after heavy rain damages the approach road of Rs 16 crore bridge
Dehradun’s Rs 16 crore bridge suffers approach road collapse after heavy overnight rain.
Dehradun: A newly inaugurated Rs 16 crore bridge at Nanda ki Chowki in Dehradun has suffered major damage after heavy overnight rainfall caused a large section of its approach road to collapse. The incident occurred just 17 days after the bridge was opened to traffic, raising fresh questions over the quality and execution of the project.

The collapse created a large crater near the bridge and disrupted connectivity between Dehradun, Vikasnagar and neighbouring parts of Himachal Pradesh. Traffic was subsequently diverted through Jhajhra on the outskirts of Dehradun.

Bridge Opened on July 12 After Replacing Washed-Away Structure

The bridge was inaugurated on July 12 after missing its original April 30 completion deadline. It was constructed to replace an earlier structure that was washed away during heavy rainfall in September last year, an incident that resulted in the deaths of 14 people.

The latest damage has once again put the infrastructure project under scrutiny, particularly because the new structure had been operational for only a few weeks.

Officials Say Bridge Structure Remains Safe

Officials have clarified that the main bridge structure has not suffered structural damage. According to them, the collapse was limited to the approach road, where soil beneath the road was washed away following overnight rainfall.

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely to determine the exact cause of the failure and whether any construction or execution lapses contributed to the incident.

Three-Day Probe Ordered Into Dehradun Bridge Collapse

District Magistrate Ashish Chauhan took cognisance of the incident and directed officials to investigate the collapse and establish responsibility if any negligence is found.

PWD Secretary Pankaj Kumar Pandey directed the chief engineer of the regional office to investigate the incident and submit a detailed report, along with supporting evidence, to the government within three days.

Officials and contractors found responsible for negligence could face appropriate action. The department has also been directed to prioritise restoration of the damaged road.

Traffic Disrupted Between Dehradun, Vikasnagar and Himachal Pradesh

The cave-in disrupted traffic movement between Dehradun, Vikasnagar and neighbouring areas of Himachal Pradesh. Vehicles were diverted through Jhajhra to avoid the damaged section.

District Disaster Management Officer Rishabh Kumar said authorities were waiting for the water level in the Tons River to fall before undertaking soil filling work safely and restoring normal traffic movement.

Officials from the irrigation department have also been deployed at the site to regulate the river flow and minimise the possibility of further damage.

Rs 16 Crore Project Faces Questions Over Construction Quality

The collapse has triggered criticism from local residents and opposition voices, with questions being raised over the quality of construction despite the project’s reported cost of Rs 16 crore.

Social activist Anoop Nautiyal questioned the accountability of authorities and raised concerns over the short time between the bridge’s inauguration and the collapse of its approach road.

Questions have also been raised over the delay in completing the replacement project, which was intended to restore connectivity after the previous bridge was washed away last year.

Temporary Repairs Undertaken, Traffic Restoration Underway

The district administration said temporary repair work had been carried out and traffic was restored. Following directions from the Chief Minister, officials and the contractor concerned were also asked to provide clarifications regarding the incident.

The administration has ordered action against anyone found responsible after the inquiry establishes whether negligence or shortcomings contributed to the collapse.

Dehradun Bridge Collapse Puts Infrastructure Safety Under Spotlight

The incident has renewed concerns about the resilience and quality of infrastructure projects in areas vulnerable to heavy rainfall. Since the bridge was built as a replacement for a structure destroyed in a deadly rain-related incident last year, the latest collapse has attracted particular attention.

The outcome of the three-day inquiry is expected to clarify whether the approach road failure was solely caused by extreme weather conditions or whether construction and execution-related shortcomings also played a role.
