Guwahati: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms across Assam and neighbouring northeastern states from July 30 to August 1. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has urged residents to remain vigilant as the weather could increase the risk of waterlogging, flooding, flash floods and localised landslides.
Assam Rain Alert Issued as Heavy Rainfall Expected
According to the forecast, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over several parts of Arunachal Pradesh, including East Siang, Lohit, Namsai, Longding, Papumpare, Lower Subansiri and Lower Dibang Valley. Heavy rainfall in these areas could affect adjoining Assam districts such as Tinsukia, Dhemaji and Lakhimpur.
An orange alert has been issued for Tinsukia district in Assam. Orange alerts have also been issued for Mon, Mokokchung and Wokha districts of Nagaland, with the weather conditions potentially affecting Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat in Assam.
Rainfall Intensity Expected to Reach 20 cm in Isolated Areas
The IMD has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rainfall of around 6 to 11 cm per day across several areas of Arunachal Pradesh, including East Siang, Lohit, Namsai, Longding, Lower Subansiri and Lower Dibang Valley.
Very heavy rainfall of approximately 12 to 20 cm per day is likely at isolated places in Papumpare district. Such intense rainfall could have a direct impact on neighbouring districts of Assam.
Flooding and Landslide Risk Increases
The prevailing weather conditions could worsen waterlogging and flooding in vulnerable areas. Authorities have also warned of the possibility of flash floods, slower vehicular movement and localised landslides, particularly in areas vulnerable to heavy rain and on hillsides.
District authorities and ASDMA are closely monitoring the situation, while emergency response systems have been placed on alert to respond to weather-related incidents.
ASDMA Issues Advisory to Residents
ASDMA has advised people in the affected and vulnerable districts to take necessary precautions and remain alert during periods of intense rainfall. Daily commuters and people planning long-distance journeys have been asked to plan their travel according to weather conditions and avoid unnecessary movement during heavy rain.
Residents living in low-lying and hillside areas have been specifically advised to remain cautious and watch for signs of rising water or possible landslides.
