Dean Elgar Confirms Retirement After 2026 Season
Elgar said he believes the end of the 2026 season is the right moment to step away from professional cricket. His decision comes as he looks to spend more time with his partner and children after years of international and county cricket commitments.
The former opener acknowledged that he is approaching the later stages of his playing career and said his growing family has become an important factor in his decision. He intends to complete the current season before retiring.
Elgar’s South Africa Career Included 86 Tests
Elgar spent 12 years at the top level with South Africa after making his international debut against Australia in 2012. He went on to play 86 Tests, scoring 5,347 runs and registering 14 centuries, with his highest score being 199 against Bangladesh in 2017.
His international career also included 18 matches as South Africa’s Test captain. He returned to the leadership role for his final Test against India in Cape Town in January 2024 after Temba Bavuma was ruled out through injury.
