MOSCOW, August 1: A deadly explosion at a restaurant in central Moscow killed three people and injured at least 21 others after an improvised explosive device detonated outside a private event, according to Russian authorities. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described the incident as a “terrorist attack” and vowed that those responsible would be brought to justice.

The blast occurred at the Balzi Rossi restaurant on Kudrinskaya Square at around 8:10 p.m. local time. Emergency responders, police personnel and investigators quickly sealed off the area as rescue operations and forensic examinations began.

Explosion Occurred Before Woman Entered Private Event

According to Russian state media and investigators, an unidentified woman approached the venue carrying a package believed to contain an improvised explosive device. She reportedly attempted to enter a private gathering being held on the restaurant’s outdoor terrace.

A security guard stopped her for inspection after becoming suspicious of the package. Authorities believe the explosive detonated before she entered the event, killing the woman, the security guard and a restaurant patron.

At least 21 other people sustained injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials have not released the identities of the victims.

Authorities Launch Terrorism Investigation

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin condemned the incident, describing it as a terrorist attack.

“Yesterday, a brutal terrorist attack took place in Moscow, claiming the lives of several people. Those responsible for this crime will certainly be found and will face the punishment they deserve.”

Investigators have launched a large-scale criminal investigation to determine who planned the attack and how the explosive device reached the scene.

Bomb Believed to Have Been Detonated Remotely

Russian newspaper Kommersant reported that investigators believe the device may have been detonated remotely. Preliminary findings suggest the woman carrying the package may not have known it contained explosives.

The report said the explosive device had an estimated force equivalent to about one kilogram of TNT and was packed with metal ball bearings, which investigators believe were intended to maximize casualties.

Authorities have not officially confirmed these technical details, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Private Event May Have Been Intended Target

According to Kommersant, guests attending a private event on the restaurant’s outdoor terrace were likely the intended targets. The newspaper reported that heavy security at the venue may have prevented a significantly higher death toll.

The Balzi Rossi restaurant is located at the base of one of Moscow’s historic “Seven Sisters” skyscrapers in the Presnensky district along the Garden Ring.

No Official Link to Ukraine Announced

Russian authorities have not publicly linked the bombing to Ukraine or identified any suspects. However, the explosion comes amid previous accusations by Moscow that Kyiv was responsible for attacks targeting prominent Russian military and pro-war figures. No evidence connecting the latest blast to Ukraine has been presented by investigators.

Restaurant Expresses Condolences

The Balzi Rossi restaurant issued a statement expressing sympathy for those affected by the tragedy.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and extend our sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of those who were killed.”

Investigation Continues

Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage, collecting forensic evidence and interviewing witnesses to determine who organized the attack and whether additional suspects were involved. Security has also been increased in the surrounding area as the investigation continues.
