Israel-Lebanon border tensions resurfaced on Wednesday after two Israeli soldiers were killed during an operation in southern Lebanon, prompting Israeli retaliatory strikes that Lebanese authorities said left at least one person dead. The violence unfolded while Israeli and Lebanese officials continued security discussions in Rome aimed at reducing hostilities along their shared border.
The negotiations, which began on Tuesday and are scheduled to continue through Thursday, follow a U.S.-brokered security arrangement reached in June that was intended to ease cross-border tensions after months of conflict.
Two Israeli soldiers killed during security operation
According to Israel’s Army Radio, the two soldiers were killed and four others were injured after an explosion inside a building entered by Israeli forces during a security sweep in southern Lebanon.
Army Radio, citing a security source, reported that investigators had not yet determined when the explosive device had been planted. It remained unclear whether the device had been placed before or after the June ceasefire arrangement.
The Israeli military’s official website indicates that the previous Israeli soldier killed in southern Lebanon had died on June 28.
Retaliatory strikes follow explosion
Following the incident, the Israeli military initially described the explosion as “a blatant ceasefire violation” by Hezbollah and carried out retaliatory strikes targeting southern Lebanon.
However, a statement issued on Thursday by Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz while mourning the two soldiers did not refer to Hezbollah or describe the incident as a ceasefire violation. The omission suggested Israel was not seeking a broader escalation following the attack.
Lebanese authorities report casualties in Tibnin
Lebanon’s health ministry said an Israeli strike on the southern town of Tibnin killed one person and wounded 12 others on Wednesday.
Tibnin is located about 25 kilometres (15 miles) from Mansouri. Before the strike, the Israeli military had issued an evacuation warning for the area, marking its first online warning directed at locations in Lebanon in more than a month.
Security talks continue despite renewed violence
The latest exchange of violence coincided with ongoing negotiations in Rome between Israeli and Lebanese representatives. The talks are focused on implementing the U.S.-brokered security arrangement announced in June, which was designed to reduce military tensions along the border.
Despite that agreement, Israel has maintained what it describes as a buffer zone inside southern Lebanon. Israeli authorities say troops continue operating there to remove threats posed by the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement near Israel’s northern frontier.
